Don't get me wrong. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest was a very good movie, one of the few I gave a 10. The film was very well made, well acted, well casted, and, though it is a simple story, it not only won Oscars, it won our hearts (which "Driving Miss Daisy" supposedly did, though I hated that film. Some people might not like it, but I give it a 10. The Indian guy who played Nickleson's institution-mate and killer was a native local Park Ranger where the film was shot, the crew thought he looked good for the part, so he played it and went on to an even larger acting career...

Recently got a video of this film, which I had seen on first release in 1975, for my son's 23d birthday. Watched it again. Then again. Four times total, each time more engrossing. What a perfect film: story from Ken Kesey, casting, acting, directing. What a powerful and symbolic performance from Will Sampson as Big Chief! And McMurphy: counterpoint between a living human being and the smothering, oppressive, deadening- and murderous- force of society. Scatman Crothers, Dourif, Nicholson are superb. An easy 10. I have never seen a more moving cinematic scene than the final impulsive run to freedom meshing with that unforgettable musical score.

This movie was awesome, it's story, its actors, the kindness of the sheer act of earnestly living. Those who say the movie was nothing compared to the book. well, I don't know, haven't read the book yet (but I definitely will) however the movie was awesome. It made me laugh and cry in its everyday reality.
The contrast between the nurse and the man shows the contrast between the 'bad' but honest, and the well mannered but manipulative nurse. She wanted everyone to just be as emotionless and lifeless as possible, to make them all the same. To always be in control. But the protagonist shows that those men have their lives, and their lives are not up to this woman to control.
Really great! Loved this movie.
